Built at the beginning of the 16th century, the fortress (or citadel) has been rebuilt and restored by generations of the island's inhabitants - spanning the Venetians, the French, the Austrians and now Croatians.

The fortress dominates the old town and is well worth a visit, however take some cash as the entry price (not just the way up) is a little steep.
